Long before Europeans made the journey to Humboldt, Native American Tribes utilized a stunning amount of their environment for subsistence purposes (food). Plentiful salmon runs and carefully cultivated oak groves ensured that famine was virtually unknown in the area. Although European enroachment and massacre decimated the Tribes of Humboldt, they have persisted through  years of hardship and oppression and take great pride in preserving and continuing their heritage - of which food is an integral part. Seasonal smelt camps and the annual harvest of acorns are just a few of the food sources of past and present Native American Tribes, who to this day practice a great number of their traditional food preparation methods.
