Cooking up a Storm in Humboldt County

Not to be forgotten in the frenzy of food and culture in Humboldt County are the cooks. These people are the ones who are not only preserving heritage, but also expressing what Humboldt culture means to them. Cookbooks are an important record of not only what people were likely making 'back in the day', but also how they were making it. Many church groups and social clubs put together cookbooks and recipe packets made up of suggestions from their members, and typically a fair amount are old family recipes. Cooks are an overarching theme through each of these aspects of 'food culture' in Humboldt County, and they often go unnoticed. There are precious few pictures, videos, or accounts of cooks in the written record, which makes understanding their perspective difficult. However, by conglomerating the different kinds of food and the associated culture that accompanies it in the County, the modern person can at least have a taste of the impact of cooks behind the Redwood Curtain.
